Staff Writer Edmonton Oilers
Aug 2, 2007, 4:40 PM EDT
The Edmonton Oilers have signed restricted free agent left winger Dustin Penner to a five-year contract. The 6’4”, 245-pound native of Winkler, Manitoba appeared in all 82 games for the Stanley Cup champion Anaheim Ducks in 2006-07, scoring a career-high 29-16-45 with 58 penalty minutes. The 24-year-old forward finished second in goal scoring, fourth in powerplay goals with nine and was eighth on the Ducks scoring list. His 45 points broke the Ducks record for most points in a season by a rookie, and he finished fifth in scoring among NHL rookies. Penner ranked among the league rookie leaders in goals (2nd), powerplay goals (3rd), game-winning goals (3rd) and shots (2nd). He led all rookies with 19 road goals and was tied for 11th in the NHL.During the Ducks drive for the Stanley Cup, Penner scored three goals and added five assists for eight points as he appeared in all 21 playoff games. He made his NHL debut with Anaheim in 2005-06, scoring 4-3-7 with 14 penalty minutes in 19 games and then added 3-6-9 in 13 playoff games as the Ducks were eliminated by the Oilers in five games in the 2006 Western Conference Final. He scored 2-1-3 in five games versus the Oilers.Overall, Penner has scored 33-19-52 with 72 penalty minutes in 101 career NHL games.

Free Agents

The Guys !

Greene
Garon
Torres

The Oiler's have been busy this past week first adding Tarnstrom, and Grebeshkov, and then trading for the pre-mentioned Pitkanen, and Sanderson. They were not done, while attempting to sign Michael Nylander, they got foiled when he renegged, and signed with Washington instead. This did not slow them down too much as they inked F.A. goalie Mathieu Garon, and then resigned Oiler's Torres, and Greene. They've spent 29 million out of their 45 million dollar budget, but they've yet to sign Pitkanen out of the new crop ! Joni should cost the team 2.5- 3 million a year , with Torres 2.25 m. that should add up to 34.25 million. Greene's $ has not been made public, but I'd guess 1 million per year. This leaves 10 million to spend, but the Oil usually leave some $5 m. in the bank for the trade dead-line playoff run. Expect a tier 2 aged sniper like Peter Bondra to sign this summer. He would be a reasonablly inexpensive replacement for the loss of Peter Sykora !

Finally !!!

Pitkanen and Sanderson

The Oiler's signed U.F.A. Dick Tarstrom and F.A. Denis Grebeshkov, both defensemen, today. Then Kevin Lowe pulled the trigger on a great deal for the coveted puck moving defenseman Joni Pitkanen of the Philadelphia Flyers. They gave up rights to Jason Smith, and Joffrey Lupul, but they also aquired Geoff Sanderson and a 3rd round pick.

I breath a sigh of relief, and trust there will be more trades and signings to come, in order to make our team playoff bound next season.

The Oil would do well to resign Peter Sykora and then go after Robert Lang or Ladislav Nagy.

If they get that done, a trustworthy back-up goalie would be our last chore to back up Dwayne Roloson. Possibly Philippe Sauve or Scott Clemmensen.

Stay tuned this is heating up and getting exciting !

Gabes 2nd fish
This weekend was the Elks annual fishing derby down at Wiliston Lake, and boy it was warm out.
First pull on the ripcord of my boat, and I yanked it out so we fished from shore. Gabes very first cast caught a 16 inch sucker fish which almost held up as the kids winner!
BK and I each caught about 22 fish and had a great time !

Scotty Fish and I went down to Morffee Lake today to test out my boat, and what do you know... it worked! There was only one minor glich, it only ran in trolling speed. While out there I tagged these two nice looking rainbows...life is good ! I will not be skunked at Morffee this year !

Edmonton Trip !

There was a fire at Canfor last Saturday so we recieved an unexpected week off. What better time to take young Seth to Edmonton to meet his daddy's family !?! We drove straight through last Sunday via Jasper.
One of the high-lites of the trip was seeing a family of 4 bears. This little guy was about 35 feet up the tree. We left before an anticipated accident that we didn't want our kids to witness!

Our home base for the week was my dad Larry's, and my step mom Dar's place.
Each time we go to "Big E" we pick a touristy type place to bring the kids to. This time it was the Space Science Center, and the kids had a blast ! I got to visit quite a good portion of my family including Dad and Dar, Mom and Mike, Grandma M and Allan, Grandma J and Shelly, my brother Matt (went to Spiderman 3 with him) Wendy and her kids, Jill & Jay and their kids, Cherylyn and her boys. Plus Greg & Crisie and their 3, and Rick & Trish with their little one all in Fox Creek. Not bad for a 5 day rally !
